The Tristan mantel clock uses only the finest cherry cabinetry available. Sternreiter has assembled this fine mantel clock in the USA using a German made mechanism and dial. The quality construction of this clock is evident with the hinged, heavy cast brass bezel and brass hinges. The dial is enamel and the Westminster chime is played on long steel rods. This mantel clock must be wound by key weekly. It has a night shut off switch for quiet time or night use and is also accompanied by a 2 year manufacturer’s warranty.

When I first contacted the manufacturer in Ohio in order to get some price information as well as the location of a dealer, I got no response for more than a week to my 2 emails. Only after I called and left a voice message did my emails got forwarded to 2 authorized Sterneiter dealers. The dealer I contacted did expediate my order and I got the clock on time. But as it turned out, the bezel of the clock would not close. It remained ajar. So the dealer was extermely helpful and got me a replacement very quickly. He also kept me informed of his communications with the manufacturer, by calling and sending email updates which I appreciated very much.
I was interested in that particular model because the chime has an automatic night switch-off. Unfortunately the night swich-off is factory pre-set. You cannot select the time for the chime to shut off. The alternative would be to manually turn on and off the chime, which defeats the purpose of an automatic shut-off. Additionally, the tab that closes the besel is not very sturdy. Same with the hinges of the bezel. With time the tab and hinges will most probably need to be replaced. Finally the sound of the chime is not as clear as I wished. And it chimes one minute ahead of its time. I understand that this problem will self correct itself within the next few days. As for keeping time, so far so good.
Overall it is a good product for the price. The fancier the mechanism and the more expense the clock, of course. So I got what I paid for.
More importantly, the experience with the dealer was great. He is a wonderful and very helpul person.
